a change in direction - sticky post

July 4th, 2008

I have decided to journal my other interests here. This is something iv been toying with for a while now…

I used to have another blog for these but quite frankly it was becoming a bit of a joke keeping up with two, so..when you land here and you see needles fabric or other non gardening stuff - just click on Allotment on the sidebar. Yes i do realise that people come here for gardening and nowt else. There will still be plenty of gardening along with the occasional visit from a sewing/knitting project amongst other things…

potato

July 3rd, 2008

I think iv  not mentioned this before. Back in March, i popped into a grow bag a couple of potatoes that had been lurking too long in my veg rack and had sprouted. I wanted to see if i could get a crop from them - These had flowered long before my main seed potatoes, so, I guessed these were probably Earlie’s.

When i was down at my lottie yesterday the foliage had died down so i tipped them out and surprisingly there were quite a few [enough for two meals] small potatoes, around the size of a brussel sprout. I cooked them tonight in this recipe; And very nice it was too.
Warm Chicken & Potato Salad

  • 500g new / salad potatoes, cut into ½ cm slices
  • 1 tbsp balsamic vinegar
  • 3 tbsp extra virgin olive oil
  • 100g baby spinach
  • 4 cooked chicken breasts, sliced 400g
  • 100g cherry tomatoes, halved

Method Place the potatoes in a pan, cover with water and bring to the boil. Cook for 4-5 minutes. Drain, and toss in 2 tbsp oil. Fry potatoes in a frying pan for 6-7 minutes until soft and golden.
Add the vinegar, remaining oil and spinach and cook for a few moments until slightly wilted.

Stir in the chicken and tomatoes then serve
I got the recipe from this website Sorry for the lack of photos as my camera has gone traveling [again] to Ireland with my daugher.

minipop sweetcorn

June 30th, 2008

Why did i assume that these plants would look different from a normal sweetcorn plant. Being mini, i had visions of them dangling from a bushy plant and me picking them off… “stupid women”

Does anyone know how many you would roughly get from one plant ?

oca update

June 25th, 2008

These have such pretty leaves,  i find them fascinating  and i could while away my time down the lottie just looking at them..

I planted these near the path, which in hindsight was a mistake after reading they will collapse - “thats normal” and will spread. Whoops..  “Early on, they’ll not need much growing space but later they take up a fair amount of room, so choose your growing space wisely and plant with quicker maturing crops” Stable door and bolting horse spring to mind. Cant put it right, So, no point in dwelling on it - dam and blast or words to that effect…

Lesson learned: Read up on something you haven’t grown before, not the other way round…

Almost ready

June 24th, 2008

Despite collapsing twice…

I need to think of a sturdier way to grow my peas next year - these collapsed onto my peppers last week despite weaving some more canes through the netting. I should of known better, like a few puny canes were going to keep this lot upright…

My one and only courgette has its first flower - hubs was not that excited when he saw it. I think hes still recovering from the glut we had last year.. Personally i like courgettes, i just wish they would store longer and freeze ok.. Hopefully they’ll not threaten to dig it up like they did last year..

Does anyone know what this is - some kind of poppy ?

It appeared in my blackcurrant bush. My lottie neighbour has a few in her fruit bed,. I was hoping she could tell me but i haven’t seen her for a while. I don’t recall her having flowers in her fruit bed last year, its obviously blown over and self seeded in my fruit bed. I pulled it out as it was growing up through the bush “typical” It couldn’t self seed a few inch’s to the left, i would of kept it if it had..  its very pretty….
